Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Kratzer auf Vorderschnitt, Fleck auf Fußschnitt, sonst sehr guter Zustand / scratch on fore-edge, stain on bottom edge, otherwise very good condition. - This book explores the role of description in the interpretation of ancient Greek statuary. Although scholars have emphasized the importance of separating objective evaluation of evidence from interpretation, in practice it has proved difficult to draw this distinction. Even at the level of observation and vocabulary, the scholarship on Greek sculpture has been molded by concepts and convictions that impose particular interpretations on the material. This study examines the scholarship from the eighteenth century through the present on a select number of well-known Greek statues. The impact of the historical, cultural, and intellectual contexts that produced this specialized scholarship is demonstrated through considerations of issues such as ethnicity, psychology, theories about artistic form, and evolving conceptions of nude and clothed figures. / CONTENTS List of Illustrations Preface and Acknowledgements Abbreviations 1 The Problem of Archaeological Description Description and Interpretation Archaeology, Philology, and the Contest for Intellectual Rigor Description as a Problem in Art History Conventions of Description and Their Consequences 2 Nikandre?s Dedication and the Description of Early Greek Statuary A Comparison Descriptions of Nikandre?s Dedication The Category of Early Greek Statuary Material, Technique, and Form Ethnicity and Early Greek Statuary Psychology and Early Greek Statuary The Statue from Levidhi The Lady of Auxerre The Victory of Samothrace 3 The Analysis of the Clothed Female Form Approaches to the Clothed Female Figure The Workings of the Draped Figure The Concept of Drapery Representational Accountability 4 Nikandre?s Dedication and the Lady of Auxerre 5 Conclusion Bibliography Index.
