A perfect copy. - Contents: Hamburg -- Berlin -- Frankfort-on-Main -- Munich -- Cologne -- Photographers -- Literature. - From the Introduction: This exhibition consists of fifty photographs of architecture, all of them from the second half of the 19th century. In each case there are ten exposures, made in Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfort, Munich and Cologne between 1850 and 1914. Leafing through the picture-sequences, we see the industrialising of the cities and the change in appearance and character. The neoclassical character of the Residenz and the Biedermeier idyll are transformed into the modern metropolis, which in many of its' features is that of today. To make this metamorphosis so clearly visible is one of the aims of this show. The second is the changes in the photographic medium. For not only is the object photographed a factof history: the same thing applies to the photography. Let us recall the conditions in which these photographs were made. A history of the architectural photograph in Germany devoted to the 19th century has not been written yet. In their otherwise thorough "History of Photography" (1969, Helmut and Allison Gernsheim declared Germany a quantité négligable in comparison with France, England and the USA. This is certainly unfair, but understandable. Even today, in spite of many publications, the sorting and working-up of the material is notin any way complete. For example, the photos here exhibited are for the most part unpublished and the names of the photographers sometimes unknown. This gives a hint of the collections of old topographic photography still lying fallow in museums, public libraries and state archives today. In spite of this lack of an adequate perspective, historical casurae are clearly visible. These are usually connected with the development of photo-techniques and with the social position of the architecturephotographer.
